Congratulations to our March Member of the Month, Jon Dick. Jon has been a member for nearly two years. He is a joy to coach and has a fantastic sense of humor. He works hard and is dedicated to improving and growing as an athlete and human. We love his grounded and friendly attitude and we are thrilled that he is a part of the Commonwealth community.
Do you have any nicknames?
Like many of my middle school classmates, you may have noticed that my last name is Dick. This has lent itself to a number of nicknames-that-shall-not-be-named. But if you see me in the gym, remind me to tell you the story about my sister being made-fun of in school.
Where are you from?
I grew up outside of Boston in Westwood MA, though I moved to Chicago after college, and then back to Boston, then to San Francisco, then back to Chicago, and now back to Boston. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
This is my fifth year doing CrossFit, though I have started to take it more seriously in the last year.
What brought you to CWCF?
Right after I moved to Boston I was strolling down Somerville Ave when I saw a black Camero pumping Katy Perry with a #BodyByLarry bumper sticker peel out of the CWCF parking lot. I knew I had to check it out.
What classes do you usually attend?
For a long time I was a 6:30 am loyalist, though have recently made the move to 5:30. I liked their slogan "same workout, less sleep." I also love a good Saturday morning WOD, followed by undoing my hard work with a sour dough loaf from Forge.
What do you love about CWCF?
It's a really friendly and accessible gym. The members come from all over the world, have a wide range of backgrounds, and have all levels of fitness experience. I never feel judged...except during the CrossFit Open when I'm actually being judged.
What do you do outside of CrossFit? (work? school? etc?)
My wife Katie and I live in Davis Square and love cooking huge meals. We are expecting our first baby in June, so we'll soon have another mouth to help us eat all that food. :)
Professionally, I'm on the marketing team at HubSpot. I've been at HubSpot for 3 years, and can honestly say it's the best place I've ever worked. I even got to meet Keytar bear. (We're hiring!)
One of the great things about my job is that I have the opportunity to travel internationally a lot. I've done 10 countries in the last 12 months. I love experiencing new cultures and eating local food. I recently ate bees in Tokyo (before remembering that bees are mysteriously dying and we should probably protect them at all costs...sorry!).
What is something about you we might not know?
Here's two truths and a lie:
1) I spent my 20s performing improv & sketch comedy, and did shows all around the country.
2) I was selected to be on MasterChef in 2011, but cut from the final airing.
3) I was on a water ski trick team when I was growing up, and was the top of a water ski pyramid when I was 7.
Who is your superhero?
I've always liked gadgets, so Batman was my superhero for a lonnnnng time. But Deadpool is damn funny. And the Black Panther is amazing. So I'm torn.
What is your favorite CrossFit movement?
Maybe it's my New England blood, but I really like to row. I also love pull-ups. I spent way too long hanging on the pull-up bar in high school gym class not being able to do any, so now I get a thrill from it.
What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far?
I shocked myself during 19.2 when I miraculously did 7 reps of a 155 lb squat clean.
What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?
Short term: Being a supportive partner and present dad.
Long term: I have a dream of sailing around the Caribbean to celebrate some big milestone in my life, so started learning how to sail on the ocean last summer. Jibe ho!
What motivates or inspires you?
Besides the #BodyByLarry lifestyle?
What is your best tip for new members?
When it comes to weightlifting, don't push yourself too hard right away. Learn how to do the movements and go at your own pace. It's not a competition and it is no fun getting hurt.
Do you have anything to add?
The last thing I'll add is that being member of the month is personally a huge deal to me. When I first joined a gym in Chicago, they had photos of all the prior members of the month in various "extreme fitness" poses. I doubted back then that there would ever be a day that I would be the member of the month at a gym. Dreams really do come true. :)
