Congratulations to our July Member of the Month, Bo Bingay! Bo has been a member at Commonwealth for over a year and grew up just down the street! He has a gentle and welcoming presence and works hard in class. He has great self awareness and a contagious smile. Bo joined because of a friend's recommendation (hint, bring your friends!!!) and immediately integrated into the larger Commonwealth community. He embraces the the value that fitness should be fun and is a blast to workout with. He welcomes coaching feedback with enthusiasm and is a pleasure to have in class. We're so lucky to have Bo at Commonwealth!
Do you have any nicknames?
Bo - a lot of people know me by Bo. A lot of my parent age family friend calls me Boo, with very heavy New England Accents.
Where are you from?
I grew up less than a quarter mile away from Commonwealth. When I was a kid it use to be a bottle return.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
A little more than a year, started April 2018.
What brought you to CWCF?
Started doing CF in 2004 and liked it but stopped at some point, my friend joined and told me how great of a place this was.
What classes do you usually attend?
Sundays and an evening class early in the week.
What do you love about CWCF?
The coaches and the feeling of doing something with good form. Just the other day, Abby J was walking around my ERG to motivate me while checking my form on something she is an expert at. She made a small productive adjustment to my form and with no more effort my splits went down instantly. With strength stuff all the coaches give me one thing every time that I try and remember.
What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I am a manager of data & evaluation (bigsister.org & maternova.net), and I pick up days moving furniture (https://roadwarriormoving.com/), besides that I like being on my bike (https://www.strava.com/athletes/10174467) and traveling with my wife (stepplab.com).
What is something about you we might not know?
Dad still rents the same spot I grew up in close to Commonwealth, and we still run the hills across the street (Winter Hill) most Sundays.
Who is your superhero?
Harriet Tubman, lets that hero on our twenty-dollar bill already!
What is your favorite CrossFit movement?
Front Squat, I hate the front squat, every rep is a struggle, until I get warmed up, and I remember to cue all the points, and there is usually one set of reps where I feel like I could lift 50% more. That one set is my favorite.
What is your greatest achievement in the gym so far?
I've kept showing up for more fitness, I can lift better, I learn every session, I'm just happy that I am still here.
What is one short-term goal, one long-term goal, and what have you been doing to work on them?
Short term, injury prevention, long term, have more sets with good form. I have been working on mobility before each session, especially ankle and hamstrings.
What motivates or inspires you?
Feeling fit feels good, being able to move around well for as long as I can.
What is your best tip for new members?
Keep at it! The more you put into it the more you get out of it.
Do you have anything to add?
Thanks for this honor, Commonwealth is a special place. Thank you.
